The delivery of effective perioperative medicine for enhanced patient benefit is a natural evolution in healthcare using existing skills and expertise within the NHS.

Anaesthetists are the largest single specialty group of doctors within the NHS and play a critical role in the care of patients before, during and after surgery. Over two-thirds of hospital in-patients come into contact with an anaesthetist at some stage during their admission.
